About Salt Therapy

Technically known as Spelotherapy or Halotherapy this increasingly popular treatment involves inhaling a fine aerosol mist of therapeutic grade salt. It is a common natural non-invasive treatment originating in eastern and central Europe and is now being widely used all over the world. Across Eastern Europe the treatment is often recommended by doctors and is even covered by health insurance. Practiced since the 18th century the therapy is shown to have many health, healing and wellness benefits. Health benefits of salt inhalation were originally noticed over 150 years ago when workers in the salt mines displayed unusually good health and absence of lung diseases.

How It Works

Some salt rooms simply pile up salt in the room which provides limited benefit. More advanced salt rooms such as our room use a specialised dry salt generator which grinds the salt into very tiny breathable particles. These tiny particles are able to reach the smallest alveoli structures in the lungs. Our Halomed generator is one of the few generators that have Australian TGA approval. The concentration levels in the room are monitored via a diamond laser and are programmed to a therapeutic level of 15 milligrams per cubic meter.

Benefits

Salt has natural anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antihistamine properties so it is effective in detoxifying the body, strengthening the immune system and relieving the symptoms of a wide range of conditions. In addition to this the salt aerosol creates a powerful negative ion environment which can lift mood, strengthen the immune system and encourage a state of recovery and general wellness which is beneficial for everyone. It is important to understand that salt therapy is not an alternative therapy but a complementary one. It is designed to promote general wellness for healthy people and to provide relief from symptoms of certain respiratory and skin conditions in conjunction with existing medications. The dry salt mist lines the walls of the airways and draws out inflammation and congestion for easy expulsion. People often experience coughing and clearing of the lungs in the session.

F.A.Q.

How long is a session?

The recommended time to spend in the salt cave is 30-45 minutes.

What do I wear?

Simply wear your normal workout or street clothes. Shoes can be left on and covered with booties that are provided. If skin conditions require treatment the skin must be exposed to the air. Our room is comfortably heated to enable skin exposure if needed.

Can I get the same result by walking in the sea air?

Although walking in the sea air is a wonderfully healthy and uplifting experience the salt concentration is not enough to cause most of the therapeutic benefits of a salt room which have 10-15 times greater concentration levels that those found by the sea. A 45 minute session is equal to 3 days by the sea! Additionally the salt in the sea air is moist rather than dry as in the salt room. This means that the salt particles do not get as deep into the lung tissue and the moist salt air has less of an anti-inflammatory effect. The dry aerosol salt generated in the salt room goes deep into the alveoli of the lungs to clean and break up congestion which is then coughed up.

Isn’t too much salt meant to be bad for you?

Eating too much salt is different to taking salt in through the lungs and skin. Too much dietary salt is linked to high blood pressure due to the anticaking agents (E535 and E 536) which can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. However the salt we use in our room is therapeutic grade fine ground salt which does not contain anticaking agents and it does not go to the stomach, heart or kidneys. The actual amount of salt that you take in through the lungs is very small in comparison to how much you would ingest with food. If you ate the amount of salt that you breathed in it would be such a tiny amount that it would not cause health problems. When the salt is inhaled however it kills bacteria, reduces inflammation and has a host of other benefits.

How often should I use the salt room?

For recreational, relaxation and general wellness purposes sessions can be taken as many times as desired. Daily sessions will strengthen your immune system, increase energy levels, improve the quality of your sleep and generally give you a happy disposition. For people with cold and flu symptoms, ear infections and other temporary respiratory discomforts 1 – 8 sessions can be very effective. Please note that you should not attend the salt room if you have an increased temperature or fever. For chronic respiratory and dermatological conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, sinus, allergies, psoriasis etc we recommend 10-20 minutes daily or 2-3 times per week.

Can Children and pregnant women use the Salt room?

Halo (salt) Therapy is safe for babies’ children and pregnant women.

Why do I feel so relaxed in the salt cave?

The first thing the people experience is a feeling of complete relaxation and relief from stress. The feeling washes over you from head to foot and bathes you in a deeply contented state of being. It’s ideal to just rest with your eyes closed and listen to the relaxing music or bring a favourite book to read. The relaxation effect comes from the abundance of negative ions that attract and bind harmful positively charged radicals in your body. This neutralising effect calms the nervous system and cancels out harmful electromagnetic vibrations in the environment as well as in our body.
